Everyone should be aware of our impact on the planet and our potential DOOM! I want everyone to switch to electric cars, and a virtually infinite range would interest the buyers. Let’s do it!

Hey Mehdi, I see you are quite passionate about electric vehicles, sustainability and climate change, but I fear you are blinded by sadness and fear. EV's don't seem like the end game, at least with Li ion batteries. The polution for making the batteries alone probably isn't small and they have to be replaced 5-10 years, depending on how you drive, how hot they get, how you charge them, etc. Even when not in use, Li ion's capacity degrades. They could be recycled, but its still a dirty process. And remanufactuting them from recycled lithium is still dirty.

Then we have the problem with the souce of energy for them – sun don't shine at night and wind blows when it wants. The only stable sources are coal, gas and oil (since apperantly everyone hates nuclear power, especially here, in EU…). With the added inefficiencies of converting heat to mechanical force then to electricity, then inefficiency from transmitions lines and transformers, charge station, inefficiency in the car circuitry and finally – the inefficiency in conversion of electric to mechanical power, is it really the right time to be doing such a jump? With all these losses and polutions, it seems worse to drive EVs than petrol cars, ecluding the lithium fire chance. The conversion in petrol cars is directly heat to mechanical force, A LOT less losses. And manufacturing is a lot claner. This doesn't seem to me like the sustainable magic pill we wish for. 🙁

Solar pannels are also quite terrible for the enviroment to manufacture due to their huge water requirement for their silicon-based cells and especially to throw away after they are spent, as they have heavy metals. Their lifespan is like 25-30 years before their output drops to 80% due to internal degradation, if they don't die outright. And as far as I know, if a cell in a pannel dies, the whole row of cellls are useless, since they are in series. Repair is impossible, as they are potted and sealed. Thus a manufacturing defect, degradation from the sun or inadequate protection can knock out a lot of the performance of the pannel, if not the whole pannel. And who is going to recycle them? Not locally, I don't know of sollar pannel factories in Canada, America or Europe, which could even make use of the recycled cells, only chinese resellers. And it costs money, no one wants to spend money in our current world, only to make.

Here in Australia, NSW, in the small sea side city of Newcastle, we have trams that run off a battery, and every time it stops to pick up, the tram charges it self by raising a beam that is commonly found on electric trains so as to power it from the lines above.
